Stop Wishing: The Power of Radical Acceptance

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,
Some momentary awareness
comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!...

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
meet them at the door laughing,
and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.

-Rumi

I don't know about you but I spend a lot of time wishing things were different in my life.  Big things and small things.  Wishing I had ordered something different at a cafe after tasting a friend's dish.  Wishing my son would not be getting another cold this winter season.  Wishing people would be different.  Wishing I felt happier or more enthusiastic.  Wishing there were less uncertainties in my life.  The list could go on and on.

When you wish things were different it takes you away from the present moment.  And when you aren't fully present, you are unable to appreciate what is or even be aware enough to shift situations through conscious choices and behavior.

Often times we feel dissatisfied with how things are in our lives because we are shooting for perfection.  We compare ourselves, our lives, and others to images from movies, photos, or past experiences.  This is a disservice to ourselves and those around us.

We have notions of how relationships SHOULD be, how our lives SHOULD be, how are children SHOULD behave, and how our bodies SHOULD look.  No matter how hard we strive to achieve these perfections, we will often fall short.  If we can lean back and inquire where we have come up with these unreachable standards, a softening will occur.  We can can awaken to the understanding: (fill in the blank) is not "right" compared to what?

With this softening and openness to what what is present in our lives, we are liberated to be able to fully enjoy what is.  Things that seemed insufficient previously now have a new taste.  We can appreciate the complexity and multifacetedness of ourselves, our lives, and those around us.

Our lives will not be without messiness.  Life is messy.  There will still be depression, anger, grief, and boredom.  But by radically accepting what is presented to us at any given moment, we will no longer be victims to outside circumstances...stuck wishing things were different.  When we practice the art of radical acceptance and surrender to what is coming up for us, we will find that the "bad" things don't hang out as long.  (Remember: what we resist, persists.)  We will find that people are showing up for us, just the way we need them to.  We will find our bodies are amazing and have their own unique beauty.  We will feel more empowered to make the choices to invoke positive changes in our lives.

Stop wishing your life away.  Radically accept all that arises and see what difference it makes in your life.  I dare you.

With so much love,

xoxo

Transforming Nutritional Paradigms

Something is very different with our birth experiences and health of our babies compared to the births and babies at the beginning of the century. Labors are longer, more painful and definitely more invasive; we cannot tolerate the pain we once could and more babies are born with physical or mental impediments. Some chalk this up to coincidence, others karma or bad luck, where some don’t bat an eye accepting it as the new norm. And although complications with birth and pregnancy have become more commonplace, there is a real reason as to why such abnormal birth experiences are occurring and this can be rectified!

“No other society is as careless about preparation for pregnancy and birth as our own” says food pioneer Sally Fallon. We tend to be very excited about our birth plan, we want to know how to deal with the pain and we are adamant about knowing how everything is going to go on the birth day. However, we tend to disregard the most important preparation factor-nutrition. What we put into our mouths largely determines the outcome of one’s birth. Some people may find this hard to believe and many even find it silly or unromantic but it is in fact very accurate.

What we eat determines what our blood is composed of and what are blood is composed of determines the health of every cell in our body including our brain, organs, nervous and endocrine systems. Pick up any baby book and they will advise you to eat low-fat foods, a 45-65% carbohydrate diet, plenty of fruits and vegetables and lots of conventional dairy. This advice poses a very big problem however, that is, these foods don’t actually provide a solid foundation for you or your baby.
To have the healthiest baby you can and to have the shortest duration, least painful labor, with the fastest post-partum recovery, mothers need to focus on nutrient dense foods. Nutrient dense foods are rich in fat soluble vitamins, low in carbohydrates, are rich in minerals and help with the development of your baby more than you may know! Nutrient dense foods, such as egg yolks from pasture raised chickens and fermented cod liver oil are rich sources of vitamin A; vitamin A is like the chief commander giving orders to stem cells directing them to differentiate into various organs, “you be a heart, you be a lung, you’re the liver”. When vitamin A is deficient in the diet, the cells are lacking direction to become who and what they really are. This sets the stage for health and learning complications both early and later in life.

Vitamin A is one major component to the development of a healthy, robust baby and a healthy pregnancy for mom. Other key players are vitamin D, E, K, K2, DHA, folate, choline, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, cholesterol and saturated fats. These substances are best consumed in whole food form as prenatal vitamins tend to be hard to digest, block the absorption of other minerals and even lack the complete components of vitamins and minerals that are naturally found in nutrient dense foods. There isn’t a single prenatal vitamin that even comes close to the nutritional value one obtains from consuming a nutrient dense diet.

We can transform our births and we can improve the health of our babies when we change what we put into our mouths. Our birth experiences began to change when we became introduced to convenience foods. Dr. Romig, an Alaskan doctor in the early 1900’s reported that “in his thirty-six years among the Eskimos (who consumed a nutrient dense diet), he had never been able to arrive in time to see a normal birth by a primitive Eskimo woman.” This was true for cultures all over the world yet to be exposed to modern foods, it was normal to birth babies in a very short duration and on one’s own. Like us, Eskimo’s, and most all other cultures, are now heavily exposed to modern foods. Food pioneer Dr Weston A Price reports, “Conditions have changed materially with the new generation of Eskimo girls, born after their parents began to use foods of modern civilization. Many of them are carried to the hospital after they had been in labor for several days”.

This doesn’t have to be our birth experience anymore. We can reclaim our power by eating a nutrient dense diet that supports natural labor and robust children. When we do make these dietary transformations, watch how women heal and stand in their truth, and then witness how this creates a Universe that places the feminine at the center. The medical model doesn’t want to see this, but I absolutely do and the truth is that this change is already underway.

Zen of Motherhood: YOGA

Honoring Birth Community Ancestor: Jinny Erderly

It’s important that we keep the legacy of our community of birthworkers and healers alive. That is why I created a page on our MothersMandala website called “Honoring a Birth Community Ancestor.” Today, let all of us honor mother, midwife and friend to many, Jinny Erderly.

Proudly, I say, Jinny was one of my midwives, along with the wise-woman caring presence of Lenya Reese. These amazing women magically entered my life during my first pregnancy and birth of my daughter 24 years ago in Tesuque, New Mexico. Just a year before, I had attended my second home birth as a massage therapist with Jinny and Lenya, and knew from that moment on, that they would indeed be my midwives when I became pregnant. Little did I know, what a vital role they would play in my transformation from woman to mother and as a professional working with women in the childbearing year. Indeed they would lovingly provide a safe, healing sanctuary for me during my pregnancy, birth and as a new mother, enhancing my peace of mind, self-confidence and overall health of body, mind and soul. Professionally, they inspired and ignited, my “way of being” with families.

I loved Jinny’s presence at my daughter’s birth – she was deeply rooted in her unwavering belief in me, that I could have my baby safely at home. When in doubt during my labor, Jinny would smoothe away any fears I had with her warm, kind voice and gentle touch. Alternately, she had a fierce, protective lioness essence about her, like the goddess Kali, assuring no dark shadow would dare enter the sacred space she held for the laboring woman.

Jinny became a licensed midwife in 1982 and along with Lenya, delivered about a thousand babies in the communities of Northern New Mexico. Imagine “catching” that many babies! What a treasure Jinny was to so many of us. Paradoxically, just before her 65th birthday, in March of 2010, Jinny was diagnosed with cancer in her right shoulder; then, one of her arms, that lovingly brought so many lives into this world, was amputated. I think all of us in the community grieved this tragic loss for Jinny. With the help of Christi Bodelli and Harmony Rose West, a joyous celebration and benefit was held in Jinny’s honor that summer. What a delightful gathering of friends, families and colleagues!

Still, the cancer persisted. Jinny would leave this world a few months later, in January of 2011, with her family and beloved midwife partner and friend, Lenya by her side. Along with so many great treasures of Santa Fe, Jinny Erderly, we honor you and your unique expression as a woman, mother, a midwife and a healer and mostly for your unwavering devotion to so many families of our community. You are not forgotten Jinny. Here, with you in our Hearts, we are nurtured, strengthened and divinely guided.

If you feel so moved please light a candle in Jinny’s honor or create an alter for her as we Celebrate her Life. And remember, you too can call on her as a “birth community ancestor” for support and guidance in your interactions with families.

"NO" Your Limits!

We all could probably simplify our lives a bit. Or a lot. We only have a finite number of hours in our day. A finite number of years to raise our children. Let’s face it. Time is precious. I want you to consider what are things you can let go of in the New Year? I was inspired recently by this quote“Our life’s work is not how much we can attain, it’s actually how much we can let go of.” It made so much sense to me.

Are there things you’re doing with your time that drain you?Things that don’t meet any important need in your life? Things that don’t help you move toward a higher quality of relationships, connection or integrity? These are the things to let go of. I spoke with a stay at home Mom recently who says her schedule gets filled with obligations, “shoulds” and tasks that she doesn’t really want to do. She says she feels like she should say “yes” because she has a flexible schedule. But she’s also not living a life that satisfies her or makes her feel connected, invigorated and alive.

What are you neglecting in your life by filling it with clutter?Clutter can happen in your schedule, your home and/or in your mind. Start to clear the clutter! Clear out the relationships, obligations and junk that don’t build you toward a better life. When you clear the clutter, the things that matter most become clear. What might happen if you start focusing on the things that are important? Your relationships become more loving, balance in your life is restored, our health improves, more patience, more joy. Hmm… how does that sound for the New Year?

Here are a few tips to “NO” your limits:
  1. Say NO to things that you don’t want to do, you don’t have to do and things that don’t fulfill an important need for you or your family.
  2. Ask for help. If you feel like a hamster on a wheel all the time, you may be forgetting to ask for help. Are there friends, family, neighbors, church members who could help you get things done? (And do you really need to be doing SO MANY things, anyway?
  3. Delegate. Maximize your energy and efforts by doing what you’re good at and what you enjoy. Could you hire someone to do yard work? BookkeeppingClean your house? It will cost you some money but it is probably worth the time it saves you and the improved attitude that comes from knowing someone else is doing the things you don’t enjoy.
  4. Check your attitude. Are you avoiding something else by being so busy? Maybe you need to commit to more quiet. More peace. More unstructured time. It’s okay to say NO to something else simply because it’s interrupting the quiet time you’ve planned with your family.
Cleaning up your time, energy and commitments is a great way to improve your life. Let’s hear it for a year of focus and clarity that motivates you to spend your time and energy doing things that truly matter in your life!

What are you ready to let go of?

Alone

a·lone

  1. 1.
having no one else present; on one's own.
    "she was alone that evening"
synonyms:by oneself, on one's own, all alone

There are many parents in the world raising a child or multiples alone.  In the United States, one quarter of all households are single mothers and another six percent are single fathers.  Many of these mothers are in a lower socio-economic bracket and lack formal education.  But that's not always the case.  Life is messy and times are changing.  Women are wanting to have children without a partner.  Fathers are getting full custody during separations.  Mothers are married but have partners that are unsupportive.  Divorce rates are high.  There are many ways in which a parent can find themselves alone in raising a child.

Not to go into all the juicy details of my personal life but my situation fits into the messy non-conventional category at the moment.  I am in relationship but am physically alone.  Although we both view this situation as temporary, it doesn't take away from the fact that I have been alone raising our child for the past 5 months.

According to the U.S. government and many other social services, I am a single mother.  However, I don't really identify with the term "single mother".  Maybe it's because I am still in relationship or view the situation as temporary...But honestly I find something dis empowering about the term "single mother".  I would rather refer to myself as being alone. Alone gets mixed up with the word lonely.  But they are two separate things.  Lonely implies a lack versus alone suggests a fullness.  A freedom to do what you want.  A sense of being enough.  I prefer to feel as if I have a choice in the situation and that I am not a victim of my circumstances.  This is in no way intended to offend those of you reading this that do identify with being a single parent.  Nor down play the challenges that are associated with the situation.  I just know for myself, I choose and create my life and right now I am choosing to raise my child alone.

Raising a child alone is a lot of work.  Being a parent in general is a lot of work but when you are alone you literally do everything.  If you are fortunate, you can hire help and you will most definitely ask friends and family to help you.  Raising a child isn't a one man show.  You need others in order to survive.  So in many ways, you will not and cannot raise a child completely alone.

There are downsides to raising a child alone.  If you have a small child, you will not leave your house after 7 pm on most nights...not even to nip out to the grocery store really quick.  You will not sleep in past 6:30 am.  And you will take care of your child even when you are sick and feel like death. You will change a million diapers and kiss a thousand boo boos.  You will miss appointments and classes because you will forget about arranging child care.  You will have moments when you cry with your child because you both are so exhausted and you feel like there is no way that you are capable of doing it alone.  Finances will probably be tighter.  You will get pushed to your edge daily because there is not that other person there to deflect the energy of your youngster.  If you are on a spiritual path of any kind, you will evolve and grow rapidly!

There are always two sides to a coin.  As I said earlier, alone can mean a freedom to do what you want.  And that's exactly what you do when you are raising a child alone.  You don't make compromises.  You wake up every morning and plan the day, the way your heart desires.  You get all the hugs and kisses.  You get so much admiration that you feel something between a super hero and royalty.  Your heart feels so full of love that sometimes you feel it may burst.  You get to take all the credit in public for your child's cuteness and good behavior.  You are the sole recipient of all the goodness you give to your child that gets mirrored back to you.

There are times when it feels more lonely then an empowered choice.  Frequently, I wish that I wasn't alone with my son and had his father here or we there with him.  But in those moments, I have realized that I am depleted.  Those are the alarm signals to my higher self to increase self care and nurturing.  To surround myself with friends and support.  Those are the moments when I realize I need to mother myself.

I don't want to raise my son alone forever.

But as I said before, you cannot truly raise a child alone.  Your friends and family will be there to love and support you along the way.  I couldn't be doing half as good a job as I am now if it weren't for the love and support from my family, dear friends, colleagues, and partner.  And no matter your life situation that has you raising your child alone, you will find and create the resources to nourish  and sustain you.

My Survival Tips

1.) Look into free services your community offers and see if you are eligible.  Childcare is the MOST expensive thing so if you can get that for free you are golden.

2.) Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for help.  I find this one challenging but have been blessed with friends that offer.

3.) Make time away from your child and doing something nice for yourself a daily or weekly priority.  You will get burnt out super quick if you don't practice self care.  It could be as simple as asking a friend to watch your child and going for a long walk.  Just make the time.

4.)  Connect with other moms so that you have mom friends (or dad friends!)  Mom friends will offer you a listening ear.  They can relate.  And they can watch your child if you're in a pinch.

5.) If you have a baby, try to get your baby on a nap schedule so that you can predict the time he/she will sleep every day.  That way you can plan your day accordingly and you can avoid an overtired cranky baby as much as possible.  The only reason I was able to get through my last semester of classes in grad school was because I knew I could study during nap times and I knew when and for about how long.  The book Healthy Sleep Habit, Happy Child is amazing.

6.) Remember you create your life.  If you don't want to be alone, then don't be.  You can always choose a new relationship, live with family, share a home with another family, surround yourself with friends etc.  Your life is up to you to design.
